Missing woman upset, friends say

By Rosemarie Bernardo

Friends of Nola Rebecca Thompson said she appeared agitated when they last saw her the day before she turned 45 -- and days before she was reported missing on Kauai.

"She was shaking and trembling," said her mother, Pearl Thompson, noting that friends had described her daughter's appearance before she disappeared. Normally, "she's very calm. Nothing upsets her," Thompson said.

Nola Thompson, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., was reported missing on Kauai Thursday. She traveled to the island for a week-long vacation to celebrate her birthday.

Thompson's mother said she last spoke to her daughter at 10:30 p.m. Aug. 31, her birthday. "She seemed happy," said her mother, saying she had planned to head to a lounge after they spoke and take a bus tour the following morning. Her mother later found out she instead rented a car -- a silver two-door Chrysler convertible with the license plate KZF 570 -- last Wednesday for two days before she was scheduled to leave Kauai on Friday.

Thompson was last seen at the rental car business, according to Kauai Police Assistant Chief Roy Asher.

When Thompson's mother didn't receive a phone call from her the day after her birthday, she left multiple messages on her phone. "I never heard from her," she said.

Thompson and her boyfriend of five years recently ended their relationship. It was a mutual break-up and the two remain friends, said her mother.

No foul play is suspected at this time, Asher said.

Police conducted an extensive search for Thompson. There have been no sightings so far of Thompson or the rental car.

Star-Advertiser reporter Rob Shikina contributed to this report.
