A $5,000 donation from Carole Kai Charities/Great Aloha Run, and a percentage of a day's sales from Whole Foods Market's Kahala Mall store were among numerous community contributions made to send Kapiolani Community College's Junior American Culinary Federation Competition Team to the national championship. "Team Hawaii" won the event in Orlando, Fla., July 11-14.
The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter, recognized nine projects and architects with its 51st Annual Design Awards. Some include:
» Awards of Excellence: Honolulu Zoo Learning Center, architect John J. Ida, Urban Works Inc.; Waimea, Big Island, residence, Gregory Warner, Walker Warner Architects.
» Award of Merit: Sacred Hearts Academy Performing Arts Building, Lorrin Matsunaga, Urban Works Inc.; Kaupulehu Beach Club-Phase 1, Mark de Reus, de Reus Architects; Kilauea-area residence, Anthony De Jesus, De Jesus Architecture & Design; Na Manu Eha residence, Peter N. Vincent, Peter Vincent Architects.
» Mayor's Choice Award: A Vision for a 21st Century Ahupuaa -- Punahou School K-1 Neighborhood Project, Lorrin Matsunaga, Urban Works Inc.
Four Hawaii organizations have awarded grants totaling $35,000 to the Aloha Harvest for the gathering and delivery of donated food to social service agencies that feed the hungry. They are First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Friends of Hawaii Charities Inc. and the Tommy Holmes Foundation Fund at the Hawaii Community Foundation.
Darius Kalvaitis, Diane Barrett and Roberto Pelayo of the University of Hawaii at Hilo received a five-year, $769,711 Hawaii Noyce Teacher Scholarship to promote development of secondary mathematics teachers. The National Science Foundation grant is funded through the Robert Noyce Scholarship Program.
