Pearl City man nabbed in robberies

By Star-Advertiser staff

Police say a 47-year-old Pearl City man is responsible for four robberies of minimarts and gas stations between Nov. 7 and Dec. 3 in which a handgun was used to threaten the cashier.

Police arrested Joseph Mookini at his Pearl City home Tuesday in connection with the robbery of the 7-Eleven store at 3105 Waialae Ave. on Nov. 24.

Police issued a CrimeStoppers alert, including a security camera picture of the robber.

Police believe the crime spree began Nov. 7 when a man with a gun robbed the 76 gas station at 826 Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City about 5:20 p.m.

Police released a security photo of the robber.

Mookini is also suspected in the robbery of the Dillingham Tesoro station and the Island Mini Mart on Kapahulu Avenue on Dec. 3.

Police said Mookini was identified in each of the robberies. He is 5 feet 8 and 240 pounds.

Police and CrimeStoppers yesterday issued a news release thanking the public for its help in catching Mookini.

He remained in the police cellblock yesterday morning pending charges.
