Navy removes nonexplosive device

A Kalihi property owner discovered a 3-foot cylindrical rocket motor with propellant yesterday afternoon, touching off fears about a possible explosive device.

Police shut down Kalihi Street from 5:40 to 6:55 p.m. while Navy explosive ordnance personnel removed the device. Police said the cylinder had no explosive parts or anything that could have caused it to detonate.

The owner had been cleaning out his property at 274 Kalihi St. in preparation to sell it when he discovered the device.

Missing woman found unharmed

Big Island police found 55-year-old Sherry D. Deguair of Puna yesterday, who had been reported missing. Deguair, who has a medical condition, was found in Hilo in good health.
