Flash flood watch called for 3 islands

By Dan Nakaso

POSTED:

Oahu, Kauai and Niihau will remain under a flash flood watch through Wednesday morning as heavy rainfall is expected to mix with hot, muggy and unstable weather.

National Weather Service forecaster Pete Donaldson emphasized that the weather will be unsettled for much of the week.

With winds coming out of the south, "we'll still have Kona conditions, but it should be hot and rainy," Donaldson said. "It won't be super-hot because it'll be cloudy, but the humidity's going to be so high that it's going to feel muggy."

Parts of Kauai were pelted with rain yesterday, with heavier showers sitting 60 miles to the south of Kauai.

Southwest winds were carrying high and thick clouds over Kauai, but the clouds were much thinner over the rest of the state.

A band of showers is expected to hit Kauai today and reach Oahu tonight and then move slowly east, producing unsettled weather for much of the week over the rest of the islands.

Today's forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain, continued haze and high temperatures ranging from 75 to 81 degrees with winds out of the south at 10 mph.

Mostly sunny skies are expected by Wednesday with isolated showers and high temperatures ranging from 74 to 82 degrees and east winds, which will shift to the south by the afternoon.

The chance of rain is expected to fall to 20 percent Wednesday.
