Boys from four public schools won the annual Mathcounts state competition March 5 at 'Iolani School. They are Ethan Vo, Washington Middle School, first place; David Chang, Washington Middle, second place; Jung­hao Li, Wai­akea Middle School, third place; and Julius Balagso, Highlands Middle School. The boys and their coaches will be heading to Washington, D.C., on May 6 to compete at the nationals. Washington Middle School teacher Sung Park will be their coach. The contest is sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Miyamoto Wilson, a Kame­ha­meha Schools senior, won recognition Friday at the 91st annual Kame­ha­meha Schools Song Contest. She was presented with the Louise Aoe McGregor Award for the student director who has made the most significant contribution to the class in organizational ability, leadership, persistence and assistance to others. In other honors, the Richard Lyman Jr. 'Olelo Makua­hine (Mother Tongue) Award, recognizing excellence in the use of the Hawaiian language within a song, went to the senior girls and senior coed singers in a tie. The senior men won the George Alanson Andrus Cup; the senior women won the New England Mothers' Cup; the senior coeds won the Helen Desha Beamer Award; and the senior class won the Charles E. King Cup.
