A 23-year-old female hiker who fell 50 feet from a trail in Maunawili yesterday possibly fractured her neck, ribs and wrist and suffered "multiple scrapes and bruises," Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha said.
The woman was conscious and alert when a fellow hiker reached her, Kealoha said.
The Fire Department's Air 1 helicopter retrieved the woman at 1:07 p.m. and flew her to Maunawili Neighborhood Park, Kealoha said.
Paramedics took the woman to a hospital in serious condition, according to the city's Department of Emergency Services.
Honolulu firefighters planned to resume their search today at daybreak for five hikers who became lost last night above the Pali Highway's hairpin turn in Windward Oahu.
The hikers were reported missing at 5:50 p.m., and search-and-rescue crews had to suspend their search just after 7 last night because of darkness and cloud cover, Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha said.
The hikers had been in communication with firefighters, but their cellphones were losing power last night, he said.
They were hiking west and told firefighters at one point that they could see Pali Highway's hairpin turn.
