5 hikers rescued after overnight stay

Five lost hikers, who spent the night in the Koolaus, were cold and hungry but unhurt after they were airlifted from their perch above Pali Highway's hairpin turn, just before 7 a.m. yesterday, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The hikers were reported missing at 5:50 p.m. Sunday but had to spend the night in the forest when search-and-rescue crews suspended the search just after 7 p.m. because of darkness and cloud cover. The rescue resumed at 6 a.m. yesterday. The hikers were taken by the department's helicopter to the Pali Golf Course.

Snorkeler rescued at Hanauma Bay

A 35-year-old woman visiting from South Korea was rescued Monday morning while snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, the city Ocean Safety Division said.

Lifeguards were notified about 9:50 a.m. that a woman was floating motionless just outside the reef in the middle of the bay, a city Ocean Safety official said.

Lifeguards found the woman, brought her to shore and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Emergency medical personnel took the woman to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where she remained yesterday.

She was visiting Hanauma Bay with her husband.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the woman had died.
