Girlfriend arrested in attack on man

A domestic argument that turned violent sent an 18-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition Tuesday and left a 20-year-old Waimanalo woman under arrest in a police cellblock for suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

The woman used a "dangerous instrument" to injure her boyfriend about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday in Kailua, police said. An ambulance took the man to the hospital in critical condition with unspecified injuries.

Officers arrested the woman at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at Kailua District Park. Police said the couple have an infant child.

Parachutist in hospital after crash

A parachutist was taken to the hospital in serious condition after he crashed into a fence after missing his landing zone at Dillingham Field about 9:20 a.m. yesterday.

The man, 28, sustained "pretty significant injuries" after missing his target at the Mokuleia airstrip and drifting into a fence, Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said. He was alert and conscious when emergency officials reached him, Seelig said.

5 costly kou trees stolen from school

A Big Island high school is stumped by the disappearance of five large trees, which police are investigating as a felony theft.

Five 20-year-old kou trees native to Hawaii have been stolen over the course of about a week, Waiakea High School Principal Kelcy Koga said yesterday.

When the first tree was taken early last week, school officials found it odd, but when three more were taken later in the week, they called police. The fifth tree was reported missing Tuesday morning.

Koga said the wood is expensive, and is used to make items such as bowls, bracelets and canoe paddles. Hawaii police estimate the trees to be worth a total of about $4,500.
