Freddy Gonzalez, visiting from Texas, enjoyed those ocean waters Wednesday with his cousins at Waikiki Beach.

Potter shared a group hug with Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape and Alice Webb. The 14 children are taking part in a 12-week photography internship offered by ProjectFocus Hawaii.
Surf's up -- but not by much Bruce Asato / basato@staradvertiser.com Surfers turning out Tuesday for the high surf forecast for Oahu's south shore at breaks including Ala Moana Bowls were greeted by fellow surfers and waves that were not as big as expected. An advisory remains in effect, with higher surf expected today.
Visitors onboard the USS Arizona Memorial watched Monday as the guided missile frigate USS Reuben James returned to its home port at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The ship and its crew of about 25 officers and 200 enlisted sailors conducted operations with U.S. coalition partners and patrolled the seas in the western Pacific for five months.
PEARL HARBOR HOMECOMING | The guided missile frigate USS Reuben James returned to its home port at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Monday. Petty Officer 2nd Class Cameron Lowery held his son, Hayden, for the first time as his wife, Cassie, watched. Hayden was born on Feb. 22.

Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. The holiday was celebrated in Honolulu with crafts, ethnic foods, a health fair, keiki activities and performances of music and poetry.
All about the oceans Dennis Oda / doda@staradvertiser.com Andrew Winer, left, director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships in the U.S. Department of Commerce, met with Gov. Neil Abercrombie Thursday before the governor's opening remarks at the Council on Environmental Quality National Oceans "listening session" at the Neal Blaisdell Center. The session was held to collect input on developing plans to implement a national ocean policy.
The Honolulu Fire Department held a promotion ceremony Thursday for 41 firefighters at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park. Among those promoted was Benjamin Cazimero, who embraced his two children, Sydney, left, and Evan, as his wife, Lisa (not shown), took their picture after the ceremony.
With his father's help, Xan Waialeale got a much-needed drink of water yesterday. Xan was cycling with his father, Clarence, at Makiki District Park.
