Shark approaches Makaha shore
Officials posted warning signs at Makaha Beach on Tuesday after an 8-foot shark was spotted.
At about 1:40 p.m. a shark, described as possibly a tiger shark, swam to the shoreline and right back out to sea. Lifeguards cleared children and participants in the city’s Junior Lifeguard Program out of the water, said Makena Hart, lifeguard and dispatcher for the city Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division.
The shark was not seen again, and lifeguards said the signs would be removed at the end of the day.

The public is invited to panel discussions on lessons learned from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and risk and recovery issues pertaining to the March 2011 Japanese earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Crawford Hall at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
