A 56-year-old woman was killed Monday morning when the car she was driving veered off a dead-end road in Nuuanu, went down an embankment and ended up in Nuuanu Stream.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified her as Betty V. Cabasag; she lived less than a mile from the crash site.

An autopsy will be performed today.

Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free Cabasag, who was trapped in her car in the stream at the end of 55 S. Judd St. just after 5 a.m.

It appeared Cabasag's car rammed a steel barrier at the end of the road and went into a ravine.

Paramedics said she died at the scene at 5:14 a.m.

Our roads aren't dangerous, but the incompetent or impaired drivers that can't maintain control of their vehicles on our roads certainly are!!

SueH, please be sensitive to family members who are dealing with a sudden death to a beloved family member. Its not the right timing for your rash judgments.

Have to wait and see. Some reports said she suffered a medical condition, possibly a heart attack while driving. My ALOHA to the ohana.

Yes, the roads in Hawaii are dangerous. But the headline misrepresents the situation. The car was driven off the road into a stream and there was a death as a result. Stating that the car "falls into stream" is journalistic incompetence, which may be expected.
