Isle shipping untouched by port strikes

LOS ANGELES >> Matson Inc., the largest ocean cargo shipper to Hawaii, said Wednesday a strike at the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach will not affect the company’s operations.
Striking workers, members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63’s Office Clerical Unit, shut down the largest terminal at the Port of Los Angeles for a second day on Wednesday.
Only a handful were picketing but dockworkers were honoring the walkout and the APM Terminal remained closed, although only two cargo ships were affected, port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.
“It’s not crippling the port by any means. We’ve got eight other container terminals up and running,” he said.
Matson was not affected because it had previously reached an agreement with the union while several other shipping companies continued negotiations, Matson spokesman Jeff Hull said.
“Matson is not one of the 14 companies impacted,” Hull said in an email.
