A man who tried to put out a kitchen fire at his house required treatment for smoke inhalation this afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the call of a kitchen fire at a two-story home on Wanaka Street at 12:45 p.m.

An occupant of the home was sleeping in a back room at the time of the fire, said fire Capt. Earle Kealoha. The man was awakened by a smoke detector and he tried to extinguish the fire on his own, Kealoha said.

Paramedics on the scene treated him for smoke inhalation.

Investigators are still examining the exact cause of the fire. Damage was estimated to be $25,000 to the interior of the house and $5,000 to contents.
