Task force captures mainland sex offender in Hawaii

By Associated Press

The U.S. Marshals Service in Hawaii has captured a North Dakota man who's accused of failing to register as a sex offender.

Benedict Regidor Mauai was apprehended Tuesday night by a task force composed of marshals and Honolulu Sheriff's deputies.

The 43-year-old Mauai pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact of a minor in April 2005 in North Dakota.

According to the Marshal's Service, Mauai failed to register in North Dakota and fled last June to Hawaii, where he also failed to register.

Agents arrested him in Waianae after observing him in a car with his young son.

A marshal's spokesman said Mauai does not have legal custody of the child, who is awaiting return to his mother in North Dakota.
