The 26-year-old man who apparently drowned at Kipu Falls in Kauai last week was identified as Kualana Kauhi-Apao, of Kaneohe.
At approximately 5:50 p.m. Friday, Kauhi-Apao attempted to swim back to the edge of the pond after diving off the falls when he encountered difficulty, officials said. He then went underwater and failed to surface, according to Kauai County Fire Chief Robert Westerman in a news release.
A friend dove into the water and attempted to locate Kauhi-Apao but was unsuccessful.
Fire rescue, medics and police responded to the scene. Two firefighters entered the water and found the 26-year-old man on the bottom of the pond. Paramedics administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Kauhi-Apao was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
