Diamond Head Classic Game 5: Mississippi State 69, San Diego 52

By Star-Advertiser staff

Renardo Sidney came off the bench for 19 points and six rebounds in only 19 minutes to lead Mississippi State past San Diego 69-52 in the first consolation semifinal of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Mississippi State (8-4) will face the winner of the Utah-Hawaii matchup in the other consolation semi, played tonight at 7:30.

Ravern Johnson added 18 for MSU of the Southeastern Conference and Kodi Augustus 13 points and 11 rebounds.

It was the first action of the tournament for Sidney, an NBA prospect. He was suspended by MSU coach Rick Stansbury for team reasons in the quarterfinals.

No player scored in double figures for the struggling Toreros (2-10). USD gets the loser of the Utah-Hawaii game in the seventh-place game on Christmas Day.

USD shot only 30 percent from the field, but might have hung closer if it had converted on more than seven of its 16 free-throw attempts.
