Protesters opposed to a Target store in Kailua were among those who greeted the president and first lady as their motorcade left their vacation home this morning for their workout at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
A small group of protesters held signs asking Obama to save small town Kailua just outside the security checkpoint. One of the signs read "No Big Box Store in Kailua." Another said "Support Small LOCAL Business."
Target plans to open a store in Kailua in 2012 where the Don Quijote store is located.
Target estimates the store will draw 10 to 15 percent more traffic into the business district and plans $1 million in traffic improvements.
President Obama and his wife Michelle left their vacation home in the motorcade just after 8 a.m. for their workout and returned a little more than an hour later. They left their Kailua vacation home again late this morning to enjoy the beach at Pyramid Rock on the Marine base with family and friends. Later in the afternoon, the president and his friends played basketball at the base, while Michelle and his daughters remained at the beach.
