Today's upper atmosphere cold front brought a rare sight to the Valley Island -- snow on the summit of Haleakala.

The National Park Service rangers closed the uppermost section of the road to the summit at 5 a.m. this morning because icy conditions made driving hazardous, the park service said.

The road was to re-open at 11 this morning, said Haleakala National Park ranger Nav Singh.

Singh said ice and snow were reported at the summit of Halekala at 10,000 feet.

"It looked like dusting occurred on multiple peaks," Singh added. "The wet conditions also caused the snow to ice over in several places."

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning from the summit and upper slopes of Haleakala on Maui and Big Island's Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The winter storm warning will remain in effect until 6 tonight, the national weather service said.
