By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Two Senate committees have advanced a proposal that would decriminalize possession of one ounce or less of marijuana.

Senate Bill 1460 passed by a 5-0 votes today by the Senate Judiciary and Labor and Health committees.

The bill aims to reduce costs spent combating the drug on the streets and in the courts, reducing possession of one ounce or less of marijuana to a civil violation similar to a traffic ticket and subject to a fine of $100.

Pending approval by the full Senate on the second of three required votes, the bill would go to the Ways and Means Committee.
