U.S. Coast Guard helps Kiribati investigate fishermen's deaths

By Associated Press

POSTED:

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> U.S. Coast Guard officials in American Samoa are working with officials with the government of Kiribati in investigating the deaths of two fishermen on board a Kiribati-registered fishing vessel.

The Samoa News reports that a trawler named the "Betty C" pulled into Pago Pago Harbor Tuesday morning with the bodies of the two men. The men were identified as Mamani Eliseo, who worked as a deck boss on the trawler, and Zambrano Rolando, a crew electrician.

The newspaper says Eliseo is from Peru, while Rolando was from Ecuador.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Gene Maestas says the men appeared to have succumbed to injuries suffered from "fallen gear."

The crew was to be interviewed as part the investigation.
