Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki to be conserved

Honolulu technicians plan to perform conservation treatments on the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki this week. 

The city says the cast bronze statue at Kuhio Beach won't be accessible to the public while the work is being done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday as part of annual maintenance.

The Waikiki Improvement Association commissioned artist Jan Gordon Fisher to create the 9-foot statue, which was installed in 1990 to commemorate Kahanamoku's 100th birthday. 

The Waikiki Improvement Association gave the statue to the City in 1995.

Kahanamoku is known as the father of modern surfing and for winning multiple Olympic medals. He won three gold for swimming, two silver for swimming and one bronze for water polo.
