Sentencing hearing for Big Island killer March 30

By Associated Press

A hearing to determine if a Big Island man who beat his estranged pregnant girlfriend to death will receive a life sentence will be held on March 30.

A jury found Marwan Jackson guilty of manslaughter earlier this month in the 2005 beating death of 34-year-old Sarah Fay.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Jackson on Thursday waived his right to have a jury determine if he'll receive an extended sentence as a persistent offender.

Hilo Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura will determine if Jackson will receive a life sentence with the possibility of parole.

Jackson has four prior felony convictions, including assaults, one of which was on a police officer. Manslaughter normally carries a maximum 20-year prison term.

Jackson was also convicted of violating a protective order for the assault on Fay.
