Tradewinds return, but Kona winds, rain coming mid-week

Light tradewinds have returned to the state, but forecasters expect Kona winds to return Wednesday, with rain on Kauai and Oahu Thursday and Friday as a new front approaches.

"The tradewinds are slowly coming back, but are not going to be all that strong," said Bob Burke, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

Breezy Kona winds could return Wednesday, but Burke said because the winds should be brisk, the vog may not be as severe as last week.

"It (vog) may come back a little, but if the winds blow 15 to 20 miles per hour or more, the vog won't be anything like when the air is really stagnant," he said.

The winds will shift to the south and southeast because of a cold front that may stall near Kauai on Thursday and Friday, bringing cloudy skies and the possibility of heavy showers Thursday and Friday, Burke said.

The showers could linger into the weekend and reach Maui Friday and Saturday.

Heavy rain hit the Big Island last night, with Pahala getting 3 inches in 12 hours. Burke said those showers were caused by moisture in the air and afternoon heating.
