A barking dog complaint this morning led police and the Hawaiian Humane Society to investigate a possible illegal puppy mill operation in Waimanalo. The Humane Society seized 153 dogs.

A veternarian and three staff members of the Humane Society responded to the dog breeding farm on Waikupunaha and Mahailua streets , a spokeswoman for the society said.

Police came across the suspected "puppy mill" whille investigating two complaints — one involving a barking dog — another involving a woman who was allegedly trespassing with five dogs.

The investigation comes a day before the Senate JudiciaryCommittee takes testimony tomorrow at 9 a.m. on proposed legislation to regulate so-called "puppy mills." Senate Bill 1522 would establish requirements for licensure and regulation of large-scale dog breeders.
