Honolulu Festival cancels fireworks out of respect for victims of Japan disaster

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Honolulu Festival organizers said they are canceling the Nagaoka Fireworks Show scheduled for tomorrow night out of respect for the victims of Friday's earthquake and tsunami.

Festival organizers said they spoke to officials from Nagaoka City, where the fireworks show originates, and which suffered damage from the disaster, before reaching their decision.

"We believe the decision to cancel the fireworks display is the proper one to make considering the wishes of Nagaoka City and the tragedy that occurred," said Keiichi Tsujino, president of the Honolulu Festival Foundation. "Our hearts go out to all the victims and their families in Japan."

The fireworks show was to be a new highlight for the festival and was slated to conclude the weekend's activities.

Other festival performances and activities are proceeding as planned, including a parade down Kalakaua Avenue at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The festival showcases the cultures and people of the Pacific Rim.
