Fire crew from Calif. helps fight Kilauea wildfire

National Park officials say a fire crew has arrived from California to help fight a lava-sparked wildfire at Kilauea volcano. 

Park service Fire Education and Information Manager Gary Wuchner said Friday the firefighters from Whiskeytown National Recreation Area are due to help Hawaii Volcanoes National Park firefighters. 

Lava from the Kamoamoa fissure eruption sparked the fire on March 13. As of Thursday, it had spread to 1,704 acres of the park. 

Wuchner said fire slowed Thursday as winds diminished. The flames also had less fuel to feed on as they hit an area that had burned in the 2003 Luhi fire.

He said fire managers are due to fly to the perimeter of the blaze for an assessment.
