300 Marines leave Hawaii for Afghanistan deployment

Nearly 300 Marines and sailors from Marine Corps Base Hawaii are being deployed to Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps says the Marines and sailors with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment were to leave Hawaii tonight for a seven-month deployment to Garmsir in Afghanistan's Southern Helmand province. Training and mentoring the Afghan national security forces will be among their tasks.

Overall, about 1,000 Marines and sailors from the unity are to leave for Afghanistan this month.
