Grandson released after arrest in the death of 79-year-old Kalihi man

An 18-year-old Kalihi man was not charged in connection with the beating of his 79-year-old grandfather, who later died at the hospital, police said.
Police arrested David Hernandez III on Monday night. He was originally booked for investigation of attempted murder, but was released pending investigation. However, Hernandez was still in custody in lieu of $25,000 bail on a burglary charge in connection with a different case..
Officers responded to the home on Haka Drive about 6:45 p.m. Monday after a friend who stopped by for a visit found the 79-year-old man with "massive head injuries," police said.
An ambulance took the man to the hospital, where he died Tuesday night.
The Medical Examiner's Office deferred the cause of death of the 79-year-old pending tests.
