10,000 psychiatric health professionals gather in Honolulu

By Associated Press

POSTED:

About 10,000 psychiatric health professionals are in Honolulu for the American Psychiatric Association's 164th annual meeting.

Hawaii Psychiatric Medical Association President Jeff Akaka told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the meeting's organization shows the state is ready for the even larger Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in November.

The APEC meeting will draw about 20,000 attendees and the leaders of 21 countries, including President Barack Obama.

APA President Carol Bernstein said she was impressed by the warm welcome psychiatrists received.

She said conference attendees were greeted at the Honolulu Convention Center by people asking how they could help.

The five-day convention, which concludes Wednesday, includes more than 600 researchers and reports on post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma, health care reform, depression treatment, deep brain stimulation and childhood disorders.
