PLAINWELL, Mich. >> A funeral is scheduled next week in Plainwell for a Schofield Barracks soldier from southwestern Michigan who was killed with three others in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan.

WWMT-TV says the funeral for 23-year-old Pfc. Thomas Allers is set for 11 a.m. June 9 at Plainwell High School near Kalamazoo.

Allers was one of four U.S. soldiers who were killed May 23 when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device in Kunar province.

They were part of the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, base at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Allers was an only child who graduated from Plainwell High School in 2006 and was on his first deployment to Afghanistan.
