Large quake hits off Alaska, no Pacific-wide tsunami expected
A regional alert for the Aleutian Islands is cancelled

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska's Aleutian Islands today, but a Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, officials said.
The quake struck at 6:09 p.m. in Alaska (5:09 p.m. in Hawaii) and a regional tsunami alert was in effect for coastal areas of the Aleutians.
However, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center canceled the warning at 6:19 p.m. Hawaii time. The warning covered an area from 80 miles northeast of Dutch Harbor to about 125 miles west of Adak.
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the quake was felt through the central Aleutians and as far east as Dutch Harbor and Unalaska. There are no immediate reports of damage.
In Dutch Harbor, longshoreman Jim Paulin said warning sirens caused hundreds of people to begin climbing up a nearby hill.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 29 miles under the ocean, 39 miles southwest of Amukta Island and 1,042 miles west-southwest of Anchorage.
