A 48-year-old Kihei man died after he was ejected from his vehicle in a single car crash on Piilani Highway Thursday night, Maui police said.

The victim, identified as Robert V. Pimentel Jr., was driving a 1998 silver Toyota 4Runner northwest on Piilani Highway near Uwapo Road when he lost control of the vehicle at about 10:43 p.m., police said.

The 4Runner veered onto the right shoulder then traveled left over multiple lanes and collided with a metal guard rail and overturned, police said. Pimentel Jr. and a 37-year-old Kihei man were ejected from the vehicle.

Pimentel Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger went to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

Police said both men were not wearing seatbelts. Speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors in the crash, police said.
