LIHUE >> Kauai officials have selected a site for youth drug treatment center.
The Garden Island reported Thursday that after years of discord over where to build an in-resident drug treatment center for youth, the county has decided on a Lihue neighborhood site behind Isenberg Park.
More than 300 community members attended a meeting Tuesday to discuss the issue. Some residents questioned the decision to put the center in a neighborhood instead of a remote location.
Gerald McKenna of the McKenna Recovery Center in Lihue says teenagers going through treatment need a community setting and not isolation.
County officials say it could be years before groundbreaking takes place. Now that a site has been identified the next steps include an environmental review and gathering public input.
