A father and son from Minnesota who became lost while hiking in Kokee, Kauai, were airlifted to safety Friday afternoon by Kauai Fire Department's helicopter.
The two called 911 dispatch at 4:54 p.m., after hiking about three miles on what they believed to be "Ditch Trail," Kauai County officials said in a news release.
The 49-year-old man and his 21-year-old son were disoriented and unable to find their way back, officials said, but the hikers had a GPS device and were able to relay their coordinates to dispatch, which aided in their rescue.
The helicopter, aided in the mission by Rescue 3 and Engine 7, located the hikers at 5:57 p.m. Rescue specialist Kilipaki Vaughan helped to bring the pair to safety using an Air Rescue Vest.
