Honolulu firefighters extinguished a one- to two-acre brush fire near the Hawaii Kai Golf Course that injured a homeless man and temporarily forced the closure of busy Kalanianaole Highway.

The fire broke out on the makai side of Kalanianaole Highway but police closed Kalanianaole Highway to allow firefighters to get water from the hydrant on the mauka side near the golf course, fire Capt. Gary Lum said.

"We can't have cars driving over the hose," Lum said.

A homeless man who lives in the area suffered a thermal burn, but declined treatment at the scene, Lum said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Lum said.

It was reported around 10:40 a.m. Sunday and extinguished around 12:25 p.m., Lum said.
