A Coast Guard helicopter crew found a missing kayaker approximately five to six miles off Kaena Point.

Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the helicopter crew spotted the man and his kayak about 6:20 p.m. Sunday and a Coast Guard cutter picked him up.

Lum said a caller reported the man was diving about a half mile offshore directly across the white radar domes at the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station.

Lum said the kayaker, who was on a red, one-man Scupper Pro, was apparently blown farther out to sea and couldn’t get back to shore.

Fire rescue personnel also searched for the missing man, reported to be in his mid-40s. Two other kayakers in his party noticied him missing, police said.

The fire department dispatched a helicopter, watercraft and engines at about 4:20 p.m., Lum said.

The man had been missing for about 2 and a half hours before the report was made, Lum said.

Lum did not know the age of the kayaker or where he was from.
