Warriors add former Texas all-state QB

By Stephen Tsai

POSTED:

A former Texas all-state high school quarterback has joined the University of Hawaii football team.

Stump Godfrey, who played at New Mexico last year, is enrolled at UH, and is scheduled to undergo a physical examination and orientation session tonight.

Because New Mexico did not issue a release to UH, Godfrey cannot receive a football scholarship from the Warriors for the entire 2011-12 academic year. Also, as a transfer, he must redshirt this season. But he is allowed to practice with the Warriors this semester, and participate in all team activities, including spring training, next semester.

UH head coach Greg McMackin said he met with Godfrey for the first time this morning. Godfrey arrived in Honolulu last night.

McMackin said Godfrey applied to UH on his own, and paid for all of his travel expenses.

Godfrey was named the 2009 Mr. Texas.

That year, he also was named the Texas 3A Offensive Player of the Year in leading Gilmer High to a 15-0  record.

He received several offers, including ones from Tennessee and Oklahoma, but those schools wanted him as an "athlete." New Mexico recruited him as a quarterback.
