WAIMEA >>Workers are trying to locate possible unexploded ordnance left over from World War II at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began scanning for ordnance in the cabin area and along the beach Thursday. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says the beach isn’t closed but the public is asked to keep 200 feet from technicians.
If any ordnance is detected, DLNR officers will evacuate the park while disposal takes place.
Officials warn that ordnance, regardless of age or shape, can be dangerous.
