Hawaii County Council wants recycling of electronic waste

By Associated Press

POSTED:

The Hawaii County Council wants places on the neighbor islands for dropping off electronic waste for recycling.

West Hawaii Today reports councilmembers want the state Legislature to come up with a method that doesn't require residents to mail items such as old televisions and computers to Honolulu.

As an interim solution, the county plans to create e-waste drop-off points at transfer stations next month, to be subsidized by tax dollars.

The council passed a resolution Thursday supporting a bill, which would require manufacturers to offer drop-off points on neighbor islands.

Manufacturers are required to provide drop-off points only on Oahu. Neighbor island residents must pay postage to mail electronics to the drop-off locations.
