An alumnus of Hawaii's East-West Center has been appointed as an environmental adviser to the president of the Philippines. Juan Romeo Nereus Acosta is Philippine President Benigno Aquino's adviser for environmental protection, which is a newly created cabinet post. Acosta was sworn in last month. East-West Center President Charles Morrison says Acosta's appointment is an example of the impact center alumni have in serving countries throughout the Asia Pacific region. Acosta earned a doctorate degree in political science from the University of Hawaii in 1994 as an East-West Center grantee.
