Hawaii-based Coast Guard crews were assisting Sunday in the search for two fishermen in an outrigger canoe near Fanning Island, about 1,000 miles to the southwest.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received a call from a search and rescue coordinator in Kiribati, formerly the Gilbert Islands, requesting assistance in the search for a 12-foot outrigger canoe with two people aboard. The fishermen left Fanning Island Saturday.
The boat was last seen by another fishing boat Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. trying to haul in fish.
A Coast Guard C-130 Hercules airplane from Barbers Point is helping search for the two people.
