A Hilo man who apparently drowned while picking opihi on Wednesday has been identified by Big Island police as Brystan Alidon.

An autopsy was requested for Alidon, 20.

Police said officers responded to a report of a swimmer in distress offshore of Paukaa, about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters retrieved his body with a helicopter, and Alidon died at Hilo Medical Center at 2 p.m.

Firefighters said a second man, who was picking opihi with Alidon, was treading water in the location where his partner was last seen when firefighters arrived. A firefighter entered the water and found Alidon's body.
