Battleship Missouri Memorial opens research center

By Associated Press

POSTED:

The Battleship Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor has opened a research center for people seeking to study the historic ship in depth.

Researchers may examine archival documents, photo collections, video and oral history recordings, transcripts, crew rosters and other information at the center.

It has six work stations and will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment.

The former USS Missouri is best known for having hosted the ceremony at which Japan formally surrendered to the U.S. and its allies at the end of World War II.

The "Mighty Mo" was launched in 1944. It was decommissioned in 1955 but revived in the 1980s, after which it fired some of the first shots of the Gulf War in the 1990s. It's currently a museum.
