BEIJING >> China's security body says it has arrested nearly 2,200 people as part of a nationwide crackdown on gang-related crime.

A report posted Friday on China's Ministry of Public Security website says police in 11 regions have arrested 2,182 suspects and uprooted 270 gangs since Sept. 1.

The state-run China Daily newspaper says the campaign has been aimed at cracking down on corruption, gambling and other gang-related crimes.

A similar campaign last year broke up more than 1,500 mafia-style gangs. It exposed syndicates in cities such as Chongqing that were protected by government officials and police officers.

Chongqing's former police chief Wen Qiang was executed after being convicted of bribery, rape and extortion.

Animal Farm by George Orwell; "Some are more equal than others........". A Communist politburo is very effective on wreaking its social controls. Unfortunately 'enemies of the State' are easily labeled as gang members, statistics are very easily manipulated.

i am a firm believer in justice to the fullest for our state. i might be be labeled a NON-BLEEDING-HEART (which would be totally untrue), but i do believe that a strong sense of right and wrong must carry with it a strong penalty that is wielded with a modocum of mercy (not much - but some)! that is why i strongly believe that the death penalty should an accepted part of our state's justice system. it would put the onus on the alleged perpetrator of a crime to, first, seriously contemplate committing the crime, and, second, vigorously defend against getting the ultimate penalty AFTER DECIDNG TO DO THE CRIME. as it is now it's the other way around! no matter how severe or deliberate or pre-meditated the crime, there is no ULTIMATE PENALTY available to mete out - with a life of free room and board and health/medical plan (which is actually a REWARD) paid for by the tax-payers who are the ultimate innocent victims.
