LIHUE >> A Kapaa man is facing one year in prison in connection with the theft of a $20,000 coin collection.
Forty-year-old Joshua J. Johnson was sentenced last week as part of a plea deal for theft and drug charges stemming from an April arrest.
Johnson was also sentenced to undergo substance abuse treatment and five years of probation.
Johnson’s neighbor owned the coins and asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence.
The Garden Island reports the county deputy prosecuting attorney also asked for the maximum term, saying Johnson refused to help the Kauai Police Department recover the items.
Johnson’s attorney Craig De Costa argued the value of the coins had not been verified.
