A man and a woman were arrested in a stolen car after it collided with a police car in Moiliili Tuesday afternoon.
Officers from the East Honolulu patrol district's Crime Reduction Unit spotted a stolen white Honda at University Avenue and Dole Street about 3:05 p.m., said patrol Lt. Carl Thorstad.
About five minutes later, an officer in a patrol car saw the stolen vehicle on South Beretania Street westbound in front of Moiliili Field just east of Isenberg, Thorstad said. The officer, who was in the right lane, stopped at a red light next to the suspect vehicle, in the middle lane, got out to confronted the driver. The driver of the stolen vehicle tried to escape by reversing, but hit the car behind him, and then drove forward and rammed the patrol car, he said.
A man, 21, was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and second-degree criminal property damage. Also arrested was a woman, 20, on suspicion of second-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
No one was injured, Thorstad said.
The two left lanes of South Beretania just before Isenberg were shut down for nearly two hours during rush-hour as police investigated the scene and firefighters cleaned up debris from the crashes. The lanes have since been reopened.
