The state's veterans services director is leaving after just nine months on the job to take a position as a civilian adviser in South Sudan.
The state Department of Defense said Friday Gregory Jackson, Jr. will help South Sudan develop discharge and veterans affairs programs as the country downsizes its military.
Jackson joined the office as director in February. The department says he has saved the state tens of thousands of dollars annually by reducing office lease overhead. He also established an execution plan for expanding the Maui Veterans Cemetery
The state defense department is searching for his replacement.
