ILWU PAC endorses Hannemann for Congress

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

The political arm of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local 142, the state's largest private-sector union, is backing Mufi Hannemann in the race for the 2nd Congressional District.

In a news release today, the ILWU Local 142 Political Action Committee cited Hannemann's experience, skills and leadership qualities in endorsing the former Honolulu mayor.

"We need people like Mufi Hannemann who will stand up for the working people," the release said. "Mufi's intelligence, energy and drive to succeed will give focus to our priorities of stimulating job growth, preserving Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as bring the Pacific region to the forefront of American foreign policy."

Hannemann is among four candidates to have declared their intent to run in the 2012 race. Other are City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard, Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chief Advocate Esther Kiaaina and Hilo attorney Bob Marx.

All are seeking to succeed U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, who plans to run for Hawaii's open U.S. Senate seat in 2012. The 2nd District covers parts of Oahu outside Honolulu's urban core, and the neighbor islands.

The ILWU Local 142 boasts about 20,000 members statewide.
