Governor to highlight Hawaii-Japan 'smart grid' project

By Associated Press

POSTED:

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has scheduled a ceremony today to acknowledge an agreement between Hawaii and Japan's New Energy & Industrial Technology Organization, or NEDO, to build a "smart grid" on Maui.

The governor, NEDO President Hideo Hato, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and others are expected to attend the ceremony at the state Capitol late this morning.

The project aims to demonstrate how to integrate solar, wind and other renewable energy sources into the electricity grid.

The Abercrombie administration said the so-called "smart grid" could be expanded to other islands.

Hawaiian Electric is participating in the effort along with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute.
